This new feature of WhatsApp is to send a message to any private or group chat that will disappear after 24 hours. You can select the disappearing time for 24 hours, 7 days, or 90 days. This feature is used when you want t show a photo/video just for 1 time to any person or group.

Note: This feature can be bypassed. A person can take a screenshot of any disappearing message and you will not get any notification of it.

How to Send Disappearing Messages on WhatsApp?

In order to send disappearing messages on WhatsApp through your phone, the user needs to enable the feature of disappearing messages in the WhatsApp application installed on their device. Let us see below the steps in which one can turn on the future of disappearing messages:

Enable Disappearing Messages:

  • Firstly open the WhatsApp application on your phone.
  • When redirected to your home screen select the chat where you want to turn on this feature. You can also click on the floating message icon which is present on the WhatsApp application home screen and then select a contact with whom you want to enable the disappearing messages feature.
  • After doing so, tap on the name of the contact.
  • Then scroll down to disappearing messages. In case something is from that click on continue.
  • After that select, the duration until which you want to keep the messages in your chat box. As of today, you can select either 24 hours or 7 days, or 90 days.

The process of turning on the disappearing message option is almost similar to both Android and iOS.

Disable Disappearing Messages

  • Go to WhatsApp Chats.
  • Open any particular chat.
  • Click on Disappearing messages > Continue
  • Tap on ‘off”.disappearing message off

The feature will be disabled after following these steps.

Alert: If someone has quote-replied to your disappearing message, it will be shown in the quoted text.

Disappearing messages and Backup:

If you are creating a backup before sending the disappearing message then it will be shown in the backup but it will get deleted automatically after the restoration.


Users enabling the disappearing message feature, if have done chat back up while using this application, then such disappeared message will be there in their backup history. So, if any user is of the thought that the disappeared message can never be restored, is wrong.

Any forwarded disappeared message might not be disappeared if the forwarded chat participants have not enabled the feature of disappearing messages.
